Product Overview

LG Chem HI121H is an Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) copolymer manufactured by LG Chem Ltd. (South Korea). It is a high-impact injection molding grade ABS resin, supplied in natural color pellets. Renowned for its well-balanced high impact strength, excellent rigidity, and surface gloss, this grade is a classic general-purpose injection molding material within the LG ABS series, widely used in the housings of home appliances and consumer electronics. HI121H is suitable for conventional injection molding processes and is primarily used for manufacturing structural and exterior components that require impact resistance and adaptability to surface coating or electroplating.

Features & Benefits

  • High Impact Toughness: Maintains excellent Izod notched impact strength at both room temperature and low temperatures (-30℃), making it ideal for housing components prone to drop or collision risks.

  • Good Rigidity and Dimensional Stability: A moderate flexural modulus and low molding shrinkage contribute to the molding of high-precision, low-warpage structural parts.

  • Excellent Surface Quality: Features a high-gloss surface, adaptable to post-processing techniques such as painting, silk-screen printing, and vacuum metallizing (with an appropriate primer).

  • Mature Processing Window: A medium melt flow rate (MFR ≈ 22 g/10 min) facilitates stable filling on conventional injection molding machines, reducing cycle times.

  • UL 94 HB Flammability Certification and RTI Recognition: Meets the basic compliance requirements for the thermal index and flammability ratings of general electrical and electronic products.

Typical Applications

  • Home Appliances: TV front bezels/rear covers, air conditioner panels, control panel covers for washing machines/dishwashers, small home appliance housings, etc.

  • Office Equipment & Consumer Electronics: Printer/copier exterior housings, keyboard enclosures, speaker grilles, etc.

  • Telecommunications & IT Peripherals: Router enclosures, set-top box housings, and other components requiring a combination of impact resistance and aesthetics.

  • Other Fields: Toy housings, various industrial instrument and meter panels (non-food contact applications).

  • Note: Specific applications must be evaluated based on the chemical exposure, UV irradiation, and regulatory requirements of the end-use environment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Does HI121H require drying before injection molding? What are the recommended processing parameters?

A: ABS is hygroscopic. It is recommended to dehumidify and dry the material at 80–90℃ for 2–4 hours prior to processing, controlling the moisture content below 0.05% to avoid silver streaks, bubbles, or surface haze. The typical melt temperature range is 210–240℃, and the recommended mold temperature is 40–70℃.

Q2: Compared to PC or HIPS, what are the differences when selecting HI121H?

A: Compared to HIPS, HI121H offers higher impact strength and surface hardness. Compared to PC, ABS is more cost-effective, easier to process, and more adaptable to painting/electroplating, but its heat resistance and UV aging resistance are inferior to PC. If the application involves outdoor exposure or long-term high temperatures (>100℃), weather-resistant ABS or PC/ABS alloys should be evaluated instead.

Q3: Does this product comply with RoHS and REACH restricted substance requirements? Can compliance documents be provided?

A: LG Chem HI121H complies with the restricted substance requirements of the EU RoHS Directive and REACH Regulations (free from restricted substances such as Sb/Br/Pb/Cd/Hg/Cr⁶⁺, and uses a non-halogenated flame retardant system). TDS, MSDS/SDS, and COA can be provided with each shipment, and third-party testing reports or declarations of conformity can be issued upon customer request.
