Features & Benefits

  • Excellent weathering and UV resistance: Built-in UV-stabilized weathering system withstands long-term outdoor exposure, temperature and humidity fluctuations, delaying yellowing and performance degradation, suitable for products serving outdoors permanently.
  • High transparency and low haze optical performance: Light transmittance reaches 89% at 1mm thickness, haze is below 0.8% at 3mm thickness with uniform optical quality, meeting high transparency requirements for windows, packaging and daylighting panels.
  • Wide-temperature impact resistance: No break in unnotched impact test from room temperature to low temperature, with balanced tensile, flexural strength and creep resistance. It sustains continuous load and external impact with high product safety margin.
  • Optimized for extrusion process: High viscosity formulation delivers higher melt strength, suitable for sheet, film and profile extrusion with stable forming performance, enabling production of uniform thick sheets and high-clarity films.
  • Stable electrical insulation performance: Dielectric strength up to 34kV/mm, volume resistivity up to 1.0E+16 ohms·cm, stable dielectric performance over wide frequency range, applicable for electrical and electronic insulating structural parts.
  • High dimensional accuracy and stability: Low and near-isotropic mold shrinkage, low coefficient of linear thermal expansion. Minimal dimensional change under temperature and humidity variation, meeting precision structural part requirements.

Applications

  1. Construction & Building Materials: Extruded PC solid sheets, multiwall hollow sheets, building daylighting canopies, municipal road sound barriers, outdoor rain shelters and photovoltaic supporting panels. With weathering, UV resistance and high impact strength, it resists yellowing and cracking under long-term outdoor service.
  2. Electrical & Electronics: Transparent protective covers for electrical equipment, insulating brackets, appliance panels, lithium battery insulating structures, charging pile housing components. Its stable insulation and flame retardant performance meet safety protection standards for electronic components.
  3. Packaging & Films: High-barrier packaging films, food-contact rigid packaging sheets, pharmaceutical blister materials. Combining gas barrier property and high transparency, it achieves both product visibility and shelf-life protection.
  4. Industrial Equipment: Safety viewing windows for machinery, robot protective covers, instrument panels, industrial lamp housings. It provides safety protection while retaining visual observation function, suitable for complex industrial environments.
  5. Automotive & Transportation: Automotive side quarter windows, headlamp lenses, interior decorative transparent parts, rail transit sound insulation and daylighting panels. Withstands temperature cycles inside vehicles and outdoor weather aging.

FAQs

Q1: Is drying required before processing Covestro Makrolon® 2407 PC? What are the recommended drying parameters?

A: Polycarbonate resin is highly hygroscopic. Pre-drying is mandatory before processing, otherwise silver streaks, bubbles or even hydrolytic degradation will occur, resulting in reduced mechanical properties. Recommended drying process: 120℃ hot air circulation drying for 4–6 hours, moisture content after drying must be controlled below 0.02%. Material bed thickness should be controlled during drying to avoid local overheating and agglomeration.

Q2: What is the difference between Makrolon® 2407 and 2805 PC? How to select?

A: The two grades differ significantly in core positioning and application scenarios:

  • Makrolon® 2407: High viscosity extrusion grade with built-in UV weathering modification, designed for outdoor sheets, films and profile extrusion, with superior low-temperature toughness.
  • Makrolon® 2805: Medium viscosity general purpose injection molding grade, no special weathering modification, for indoor general injection parts and electronic housings with better flowability. Selection principle: Prefer 2407 for extrusion forming and long-term outdoor service; prefer 2805 for injection molding and indoor application scenarios.

Q3: What is the flame retardant and compliance status of Makrolon® 2407 PC? Is it suitable for export?

A: This grade achieves UL 94 V-2 flame rating at 0.75mm thickness, and official UL Yellow Card certification is available. It also complies with EU RoHS directive. Original manufacturer compliance statements and material certificates can be provided to meet regulatory requirements for export to EU, North America and other major markets.

Q4: Can Makrolon® 2407 be used in injection molding process?

A: 2407 is primarily positioned as extrusion grade PC. Its high viscosity is more suitable for sheet, film and profile extrusion. If used for injection molding, it is only recommended for large thick-walled parts. For thin-wall products and high-volume injection molding, higher melt flow injection molding PC grades are recommended to ensure complete mold filling and production efficiency.
